BLURB:
What would you do if your parents dragged you across the globe to a homeland you’ve never really known? It’s the Philippines, 2036, and Datu is forced to finish his senior year of high school in a new school, a new country. Confused, he seeks understanding and on the way finds himself in situations from chickie runs with jeepneys to needlepoint under a blonde Jesus. With a motley crew of characters including an albino with a black scalp and a flutist with vertigo, it’s hard to know where love and life might take him. “Gets?” is a coming of age story with a style that reads like Catcher in the Rye meets Ferris Bueller. On first read, the book is a sarcastic and witty story about a Fil-Am teenager, whom some might consider as foul-mouthed, surviving high school in an outrageous Pinoy future. But more than anything, it is a social commentary on religion, politics, music and the idiosyncrasies of the Filipino culture from a very unique perspective.About the Author Richard Weinbrenner Dacalos was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Iselin, New Jersey. He was the youngest of three. After a dispute with his imaginary friend, Cool Guy Jeff, about Tommy the Green Power Ranger, his parents decided it was best for them to move to the Philippines and start anew. Leaving Cool Guy Jeff in New Jersey, Richard started a new life in a new school, O.B. Montessori Center Incorporated. He too wondered why a school needed to be incorporated. It was here where he learned how to stand and sit down in seven steps, a useful skill in any business setting. He graduated in 2004.
In 2007, Richard graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from De La Salle University - Manila. After graduation, Richard had the time and resources to philosophize on the reasons why he was unemployed.
